Nishiogikubo Onna-Mikoshi (Women’s Mikoshi)

Despite Typhoon Talim approaching Tokyo, causing relatively heavy rain fall in Tokyo, dedicated local restauranteurs who organised Onna-Mikoshi decided to proceeded with Mikoshi.

Motivated women, form young to old have gathered to participate in the Onna-Mikoshi this year. It was great to see local people come together helping each other to get dressed in traditional Happi, usually worn in festive occasion.

From departure to end destination, Ogikubo Hachiman Shrine, there are may stops where Mikoshi comes to rest. At these stops along the way, drinks and food is usually prepared for the participants from locals to welcome them. This continues for some time until Mikoshi reaches the Shrine. Then, Mikoshi heads back to its original starting point, in this case, Nishiogikubo Yokocho. Over all, this takes around 6 to 7 hours.

While Onna-Mikoshi is heading to the Shrine and back, Nishiogikubo Yokocho is conducting it’s once a month event, Hiru-ichi. Biru-Ichi brings one of Yokocho street’s finest restaurants out on to a street and provide festival like atmosphere.

The street is usually filled with local people but everyone is friendly and you will feel welcomed here any time.

When Onna-Mikoshi arrives back to Yokocho, the party begins for the participants and supporters at Yokocho. Nothing beats cheerful celebration drink after hard work!
